Nagorno-Karabakh Visa

Getting in Nagorno-Karabakh
The only way to get in Nagorno-Karabakh is from Armenia. The vast majority arrive by car through the town of Berdzor ("Lachin Corridor"). The road passes through the southern region of Armenia, providing a nice glimpse of the country. Another way is driving 4x4 car through the the Sodk pass via wild and mountainous Karvajar region (in this case you've got to get visa in Yerevan).

There is two places where you can get a Nagorno-Karabakh visa:

1. Embassy of Nagorno-Karabkh Republic in Yerevan, Armenia (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm)

2. Upon arrival at the Ministry of Foregn Affairs in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh (Mon–Sat, 9am–5pm)

To get a Nagorno-Karabakh visa a very simple process. You need to fill out a single-page form including where you want to stay and every destination you’re heading to in Karabakh. If you are not sure what regions you are going to visit it's better to mark all seven regions of the country: Askeran, Martakert, Martuni, Karvajar, Kashatagh, Hadrout, Shushi. No need to add photo to your form. You also can fill in the form in advance - download it here.

The whole process usually takes about 15–20 minutes. Your passport is photocopied and you are issued a registration paper. This document contains your name, visa and passport number, and regions of the country you want to visit. You may be asked to show this by police while inside the country and at the checkpoint on exit. The paper states that you can only travel on internal roads, which are within the borders of Nagorno-Karabakh, but not including roads around the front line.

Note that you will not be permitted to enter Azerbaijan if you have a Karabakh visa on your passport, so if you plan to visit Azerbaijan request that the visa be left outside the passport on a separate paper.

If you are travelling by taxi or private car into Karabakh (specially by the Northen road) consider getting the visa in Yerevan - it's not necessary but may simplify the process when you enter the country.

Visas cost 3000 AMD (roughly $10) in cash and are valid for 21 days after issue.
